An accountant manages financial records, prepares statutory accounts and tax returns, and ensures an organisation complies with financial regulations.
Core Responsibilities
• Record Keeping: Maintain general ledgers, reconcile bank accounts, and track accounts payable and receivable.
• Financial Reporting: Produce balance sheets, profit-and-loss statements, cash-flow reports, and management accounts.
• Tax & Compliance: Prepare and submit VAT returns, corporate tax filings, and statutory accounts to authorities like HMRC or Companies House.
• Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist management in building budgets, tracking expenditures, and analysing financial risks.
• Auditing: Support internal and external audits by organizing records and resolving discrepancies.
Key Skills & Requirements
• Education: A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or completion of vocational/higher apprenticeships.
• Certifications: Working toward or holding qualifications like ACA, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, or CPA (varies by region).
• Technical Proficiency: Advanced command of Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, complex formulas) and accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, or Xero.
• Core Competencies: Strong numerical accuracy, attention to detail, analytical thinking, and business communication.
